- Rudiments
- Reading charts
- Beats
- Technique
Here are a few answers to questions you might have:
What do you need to start drums?
You will only need a pair of drum sticks and a flip file for the notes I give you. I don’t suggest buying a drum kit until after a few months of playing, to make sure that you do enjoy drums and will carry on for a while to make your purchase worth it. The studio is also available for rental to rehearse should you not have a drum kit, for the first bit of time.
Do you need any experience?
No. In the first few lessons I will explain everything from scratch. If you played sports at school or have good coordination, it may come easier to you, but if not it doesn’t mean you wont be able to play drums in time. If you do have experience I will evaluate your level and we will take it from there.
What is covered in the lessons?
How to read drum sheet music, Rudiments, Technique, Charts, Beats and Solos. This covers everything to enable you to play anything that is put in front of you, and to be a technically great drummer.
Where are lessons taught from?
Drum lessons are taught from a studio in Waverly JHB. Should you wish to have lessons in the convenience of your own home, you will need a full drum kit. Costs will however change. Please see below.

Testomonials from Current / Past Students:
"I think its extremely important to find a teacher that you are able to work well and get along with, chances are you wont enjoy or improve if you dont like your teacher. Since Rikki has been my teacher, I have improved tremendiously and gained alot of confidence in my playing. Rikki is very supportive and a breath of fresh air from the many ego-sentric male drummers out there."
"Learning any instrument is quite challenging at first, but right from the start Rikki gives you the confidence that you’re going to be able to play the drums making the challenge seem less insurmountable. Her lessons are well structured and she takes the time to explain why you’re learning certain techniques – not just meaningless drills."
“Rikki Brest is a fantastic teacher, no question about it. She has an amazing sense for balance. By that I mean she teaches you what you need to know in your drum lessons; rudiments, reading music, music theory, and such; but also teaches you fun things to mix it up and keep you interested. She is also incredibly patient. She maintains a positive attitude even in the face of difficulty, and speaking of attitude; one of Rikki’s best traits as a teacher is that she is very friendly. Rikki is an absolutely superb drum teacher. Her combination of knowledge, fun, professionalism, and the eloquence to bring everything together in a way that makes sense is what makes her lessons so useful and effective. You can stop looking. You have already found the website of the best drum teacher in South Africa. Rikki is the consummate professional always bringing total dedication and energy to everything that she is involved in.
